SMOKIE - Tuesday 9th November 2010 |
|
|
|
|
The internationally successful British rock ‘n’ roll band will be touring Australia for the first time ever this November!
Their landmark ballad of unrequited love, Living next door to Alice was released in 1976 and Australia quickly embraced the song, sending it soaring up the charts.
With chart-topping hits like ‘Living Next Door to Alice’, ‘Lay Back in the Arms of Someone’ and ‘If You Think You Know How to Love Me’ and constant tours of the UK and Europe, Smokie is one of the most popular bands in the world today.
Their massive success story has continued to flourish around the globe including Scandinavia, South Africa, Germany and even China. Smokie are a band which has sold out tours and gained platinum records in four decades – the 70s, 80s, 90s and the present day. Smokie’s sound is a combination of hook-laden songs and distinctive but unashamedly Stateside-influenced soft-rock harmonies, their secret being their vocal blend – a rasping, emotion-drenched lead set against melodic harmonies that produces a unique, bittersweet result.
Don’t miss Smokie for the first time at QUEENS PARK THEATRE - live this November! TICKETS ON SALE NOW!!

6.00pm MID-AUGUST LUNCH AKA “Pranzo di ferragosta” (Italian) RATED: PG, RUN TIME: 75 Mins
A man unexpectedly finds himself talking care of four women, three of whom he barely knows, in this sunny comedy from Italy. Gianni (Gianni di Gregorio) is a man in his mid-sixties who still lives with his mother; given that Valeria (Valeria De Franciscis) is well into her nineties, these days he looks after her rather than the other way around, though she remains quite spry given her age. Gianni and Valeria share an apartment in a building owned by Luigi (Alfonso Santagata); Gianni owes money on the rent, and Luigi, who wants to take off for the midsummer festivities of Ferragosto, makes him a deal -- Luigi will forgive the debt if his elderly mother, Marina (Marina Cacciotti), can stay with Gianni and Valeria for a few days. Gianni grudgingly agrees, but is upset when he discovers Luigi has also brought his aging aunt Maria (Maria Calì). Word apparently circulates that Gianni is running an informal home for the elderly, as his friend Marcello (Marcello Ottolenghi) stops by and drops off his mother, Grazia (Grazia Cesarini Sforza), for a day or two. While Gianni scrambles to look after the various needs of four elderly women, it soon becomes clear the ladies have strongly differing views on a number of subjects, making his job all the more difficult. Pranzo di Ferragosto (aka Mid-August Lunch) was written and directed by Gianni di Gregorio, who also played the harried son; it was the first directorial project for the veteran screenwriter.

8.00pm THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE AKA “Flickan som lekte med elden” - Swedish RATED: MA15+, RUN TIME: 129mins WARNING: Strong violence, sexual violence and sex scenes

The publisher of "Millennium" magazine, Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) has built an empire on his ability to shake up the establishment. Approached by a young journalist with evidence that high-ranking Swedish officials are involved in sex trafficking and crimes against minors, the incensed magazine publisher launches a comprehensive investigation that threatens to implicate some of the most powerful politicians in the country. Noomi Rapace and Alexandra Eisenstein co-star.
